DETAILS OF THE OFFER

Synchrotron Imaging Applied to Neurosciences:

Environmental exposures to chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for the rise of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. Many autistic children have zinc deficiency, while in others an elevation of lead is observed, but the molecular mechanisms beyond this neurodevelopmental toxicity are unknown.

Missions:

To investigate the hypothesis that zinc homeostasis and planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling pathway converge during the formation of the axon initial segment (AIS). We hypothesize that zinc dysregulation and/or lead exposure may negatively impact PCP signaling and AIS formation, thus impairing the establishment of neuronal polarity. Molecular remediation strategies will also be studied.

Tools:
Live-cell fluorescence microscopy of proteins and synchrotron imaging of metals.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Neurobiology, Biology, Biochemistry or related fields.
  • Experience in cell biology, confocal and/or synchrotron microscopy
  • Interest in the field of health/environmental research
  • Interest in innovative imaging techniques and data analysis
  • Ability to work meticulously
  • Ability to communicate and write in English
